YAKEL HOUSE AND UNION BREWERY
The Yakel House is a federal style brick residence built around 1863. Phillip Yakel established Alton’s first brewery in the 1830’s. His son, George built the house. The adjoining property was used for brewing from establishment of the brewery in 1836 until its closing in the 1950’s. Some of the buildings which housed the Union Brewery and its successor, the Bluff City Brewery still survive. The combination of the residence and brewery buildings constitutes an excellent example of a mid – 19th century family-owned brewery complex.
