HASKELL PLAYHOUSE
Haskell Playhouse was built in 1885 for Lucy Haskell, daughter of Dr. W.A. Haskell and Floence Hayner Haskell at the rear of the Haskell residence (since torn down). The flamboyant elements of the Queen Anne period of design are represented well in this playhouse. It is reported that Lucas Pfeiffenberger designed the playhouse. Lucy Haskell died in 1889 at age nine of black diphtheria.  In 1932, Mrs. Haskell left her 6.4 acre estate containing the Henry Street residence and the playhouse to the City of Alton. The playhouse was to be retained in memory of Lucy.
