AMERICAN WOMEN’S LEAGUE CHAPTER HOUSE
This is one of ten houses in the state of Illinois built as chapter houses for the American Women’s League. The houses were built by Edward Lewis, of University City, Missouri. The American Women’s League was founded in 1908 by Edward Lewis who published newspapers and magazines aimed at female readership. The League was formed to advance, protect and uplift american womanhood and was a strong supporter of women’s suffrage. It also served as a huge subscription gathering agency for his many publications. Thirty nine of the the chapter houses were built in the United States, ten of them in Illinois. The Chapter House in Alton was built in 1909-10 and is a splendid example of arts and crafts architecture.
