Alton Historic Commission Website

The Alton Historic Commission was established to identify, safeguard and preserve buildings having an historic or architectural value to the City of Alton. The Commission encourages the preservation, restoration and rehabilitation of historic buildings in the city of Alton.

One of the principal ways the Commission accomplishes this is to require building owners to submit plans for any alteration, demolition or new construction on buildings within Alton's three National Register Historic Districts to the Commission for approval. For those interested in Alton's three National Register Districts as well as the buildings individually listed on the National Register, click on the "National Register" at left. To determine whether a property is in one of the three districts, click on "Addresses". To learn more about the Commission, its members, meeting dates or agendas for upcoming meetings, click on "Commission". To review Alton's Historic Preservation Ordinance, click on "Preservation Ordinance".
